We talk a lot about freedom this time of year, especially as we celebrate the Fourth of July. Yet, for many of the families I work with, the traditional idea of freedom feels disconnected from their daily reality.

What they are actually craving is a different kind of freedom. The freedom from the constant buzzing of a phone, the freedom from the pressure of work following them into the weekend, and the freedom to finally feel connected to their kids.

When you are constantly carrying the weight of professional expectations and household responsibilities, it is easy to feel like you are in the same room as your loved ones but a million miles apart. You are not alone in that exhaustion. The goal is not to have a perfect, picturesque holiday; the goal is to be a present parent who is able to show up fully.

True freedom is coming back to your real life, your real body, and your real people. This weekend, I encourage you to set aside the screens, turn on some music, and simply listen to what your family has to say. It is time to create a space where childhood is restored and families are truly healed.

We dove into the vital connection between our physical health and the emotional landscape of our lives. When we talk about healing, we focused on addressing root causes such as generational trauma, gut health, and the toll of chronic stress on the nervous system.

We explored how the inseparable gut-brain connection underscores how physical and emotional health are deeply intertwined.
We also discussed essential insights on family dynamics, emphasizing that we must look at the entire family system rather than just an individual child when treating trauma. Every parent knows the feeling. Your child talks back, shuts down, or throws a full-blown tantrum, and your immediate instinct is to correct the behavior on the spot.

But when we rush straight to correction, we often miss what our children are actually trying to tell us.
Behavior is communication. A tantrum usually means “I’m overwhelmed.” Defiance often means “I’m feeling powerless.” Clinginess signals a need for connection, and withdrawal usually means “I don’t know how to ask for help.”

Your child is not the problem. Your child is the signal.
Before you react to the next hard moment, try a new approach. Take a deep breath. Get on their eye level. Soften your face, and say, “I know it feels really hard right now. I’m here. Help me understand.”
When you lead with connection first and correction second, you change the entire emotional temperature of your home.

Seeing Dr. Ming Xu Wang again after 20 years was deeply meaningful.

What inspires me most about him is not only what he has accomplished, but how he has lived his life. He came to this country from China, overcame extraordinary odds, and built a life marked by excellence, beauty, generosity and most of all purpose. And for seven years, right here in my hometown Nashville, Dr. Wang’s Eye Ball ballroom fundraiser helped children restore their sight who could not have afforded it. That kind of vision-driven generosity leaves a legacy.

through trauma-informed counseling and creative healing services like dance, art, and music classes for children who otherwise could not afford them.

Some children need help seeing.

This week I had the honor of meeting with U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn and her team as part of a growing network of people fighting for children.

Marsha and I even had a good laugh together about how the only show we both really approved for our children (her grandchildren) was Bluey. 😂 And honestly… that says a lot.

Because deep down, I think parents know:
we are hungry for innocence,
for imagination,
for stories that protect childhood instead of hijacking it.

And I need to say this as plainly as I know how:

What Big Tech has done to childhood is this generation’s version of Big Tobacco.

For years, people minimized the harm.
For years, families were told not to worry.
For years, profit came before protection.

And now we are living with the fallout.

I see it every day in my work:
anxious kids,
disconnected families,
explosive behavior,
nervous systems stuck on overdrive,
parents who feel like they are losing their child to a screen.

This is not just a parenting issue.
This is not just the way the world is now.
This is a public health crisis happening inside our homes.

Yes, legislation matters.
Yes, accountability matters.
And yes, I believe change is coming.

But families need help now.

That is why I created The Mountain Method and why I do this work through my practice Music City Family Therapy here in Nashville.

I help families break generational patterns and reverse the negative effects of unhealthy screen overuse through digital detox, nervous system regulation, connection, and the power of play.
